Unit Conversion in Physics (CBSE Class 11)

1.2 Fill in the blanks by suitable conversion of units

(a) 1 kg m² s⁻² = ______ g cm² s⁻²
Step 1: 1 kg = 10³ g
Step 2: 1 m² = (10² cm)² = 10⁴ cm²
Step 3: Multiply
= 10³ × 10⁴ g cm² s⁻²
= 10⁷ g cm² s⁻²
(b) 1 m = ______ ly
1 light year = 9.46 × 10¹⁵ m
1 m = 1 / (9.46 × 10¹⁵) ly
= 1.06 × 10⁻¹⁶ ly
(c) 3.0 m s⁻² = ______ km h⁻²
Step 1: 1 m = 10⁻³ km → 3.0 m s⁻² = 3.0 × 10⁻³ km s⁻²
Step 2: 1 s⁻² = (3600)² h⁻² = 1.296 × 10⁷ h⁻²
Step 3: Multiply
= 3.0 × 10⁻³ × 1.296 × 10⁷
= 3.89 × 10⁴ km h⁻²
(d) G = 6.67 × 10⁻¹¹ N m² kg⁻² = ______ cm³ s⁻² g⁻¹
1 N = 1 kg m s⁻²
So, N m² kg⁻² = m³ s⁻² kg⁻¹

Convert units:
1 m³ = 10⁶ cm³
1 kg⁻¹ = 10⁻³ g⁻¹

Multiply factors:
= 10⁶ × 10⁻³ = 10³
= 6.67 × 10⁻¹¹ × 10³
= 6.67 × 10⁻⁸ cm³ s⁻² g⁻¹
